The droppings are very similar to a grain of black pepper, about the same size, shape, and color. You will see them in cabinets, drawers, bookshelves, under appliances and other generally out of sight places.
How about Exoskeletons?
They shed their skin (exoskeleton) during a process called molting (similar to a snake) and leave them for you to find. These exoskeletons are brown or black and look like the shell of the cockroach that left it behind. You will find the exoskeletons in the same places as the droppings.

The exoskeleton primarily has an odd, musty odor that we can smell. The larger the infestation, the stronger the smell.

Move them from time to time and clean thoroughly under your appliances, use cleaning solutions. Seal any cracks that you can see with caulking. Remember that food, water and shelter is what they seek.
